Government, County & Public Land Work

A small, insured, owner-operated contractor for county, municipal and public-land vegetation work — with our credential status stated plainly.

County land and water conservation departments, parks departments, townships and land trusts across Northeast Wisconsin all run into the same problem: the work is funded and there is nobody available to do it. That is the gap this business was built to fill.

What we bring is a skid steer with a forestry mulching head, the attachments and trucks to go with it, general liability insurance, and an owner who operates the machine himself. What that gets a project manager is a single point of contact, a schedule that does not depend on a subcontractor chain, and a contractor small enough to actually show up for a four-acre job.

Here is exactly where we stand on credentials, stated plainly so nobody wastes time in a procurement review: J Schleis Services LLC carries general liability insurance. We are not bonded yet — bonding is in progress. We are not SFI certified yet — certification is in progress. We do not hold a pesticide applicator license and therefore do not bid any chemical work. We are not yet registered as a public procurement vendor and are working through that process now.

If a solicitation requires a bond or a certification we do not yet hold, we are not the right bidder for it today and we will say so rather than waste your time. For the work we can take — mechanical vegetation management, mulching, clearing and reforestation site prep on smaller parcels — we would like the chance to quote it. Justin’s longer-term aim is DNR and U.S. Forest Service work, and the certifications are being pursued with that in mind.

What’s included

  • Mechanical vegetation management on county and municipal parcels
  • Reforestation and planting site preparation
  • Trail, corridor and right-of-way clearing
  • Invasive brush removal — mechanical only, no chemical application
  • Small-acreage projects that larger contractors will not mobilize for
  • General liability insurance — certificate provided on request
  • W-9, insurance certificate and references supplied for vendor onboarding
  • Invoice and net terms billing

Why J Schleis Services

J Schleis Services is Justin Schleis — one owner, one machine, and no crew to relay your instructions through. The person who walks the property with you is the person running the mulcher. That is the whole pitch, and on this kind of work it is worth more than it sounds: land clearing goes wrong when somebody cuts what you meant to keep.

We are fully insured (general liability, certificate on request) and the work carries a 2-year workmanship warranty. We are a new company — started in 2026 — and we would rather tell you that than have you find out. What we will not do is take a deposit for work the ground is not ready for, or quote you an acreage rate over the phone that turns out to be wrong once we see it.

Common questions

Are you a registered vendor?
Not yet. Public procurement vendor registration is in progress. If your department can onboard a new vendor as part of awarding the work, tell us what you need and we will get the paperwork back to you quickly.
Are you bonded?
Not yet — bonding is in progress. We carry general liability insurance today and can send a certificate the same day you ask for it. If a solicitation requires a bond right now, we are not eligible for it and we will tell you that up front.
Are you SFI certified?
Not yet. Certification is being pursued. We are not going to imply otherwise on a bid document.
Can you handle herbicide treatment as part of a contract?
No. Without a pesticide applicator license we do not bid or perform chemical work, and we will not sub it in quietly under our name. We bid the mechanical scope only.
What size projects are you set up for?
Small to mid-size mechanical work — the kind of parcel where mobilizing a large contractor does not pencil out. That is where a one-machine, owner-operated outfit is genuinely the better answer.
Who do we talk to?
Justin Schleis, directly. Call or text (920) 362-1569 or email jschleis90@icloud.com. There is no account manager in between.
